AGENTS WORK WITHOUT WEAPONS IN CANCUN

"Of four policemen who are going to attend an emergency call, only one has a weapon, and the bulletproof vests that we wear have already expired," says one of the ministerial police who participated Thursday in the work stoppage of workers of the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo. A ministerial police, those who were previously known as "judiciales", has an established salary of 3,500 pesos biweekly, plus 2,000 pesos given to them by the Ministry of Finance, that is, a ministerial earns 5,500 pesos, money that is used to pay rent or mortgage, to support his family, to eat away from home and to pay for the gasoline of his car with which they perform the diligences and investigations assigned to them, because each month, they receive only 500 pesos for gasoline. For 10 years the salary of the police has not had any increase.
In Playa del Carmen, the ministerial agents only have two vehicles that belong to the institution, the other vehicles used by them to carry out their work, belong to the agents. The bullet-proof vests worn by the agents who are going to attend the increasingly common executions in the Mexican Caribbean expired years ago; "If they shoot us, they are useless, we are gone," says one of the protesting police; who adds: "we are not afraid that criminals know about it, because we are already tired," he says.

Life insurance that covers the men who face crime in the Mexican Caribbean is for 200,000 pesos, that is what an agent’s life costs. Insurance claim is a nightmare, adds one of the dissatisfied, who questions: "And in the meantime, out of what the widow and her children will live, and then, what will she do with only those 200,000 pesos". Previously, life insurance for a ministerial police officers was worth 500,000 pesos, but they were reduced to 200,000 pesos. Agents always must be available to be transferred to another municipality, and when that happens, their salary increases 300 pesos.

Work overload is another problem, each day they get 20 new investigation file folders; something that is impossible to do ... The work stoppage was used by organized crime to try to execute several ministerial policemen in Cancun, it was around 9 pm that criminals arrived at Prado Norte neighborhood, in Cancun, where several agents live, and opened fire injuring Óscar Raymundo PR, who was in the park with his children; his colleagues could do little to go after the aggressors, because they were unarmed because of the work stoppage. PORTRAIT OF A DESPOT PROSECUTOR

The workers of the State Attorney General's Office are also protesting because of the insensitivity of their boss, Miguel Ángel Pech Cen, a prosecutor appointed by the Congress -from a list of three sent by the state governor, Carlos Joaquín González, in what was one of his first failed and questionable elections.

At the time, numerous civil society organizations repudiated his appointment because of his relationship with the case of pedophile Jean Succar Kuri.

Yesterday's work stoppage was preceded by letters and official letters in which the workers of the Prosecutor's Office explained their needs and demands, but Pech Cen, the prosecutor who cheats with the case of former governor Borge, did not listen to them.

A ministerial agent who worked as his escort says that Miguel Ángel Pech Cen is a despotic, insensitive, arrogant and ... miserable man.

"He took away the hours of rest to which we have a right, and even the rest days, and so that we did not go to our houses to take a bath, he put a shower outside his house so that we could bathe there. Also, in order for us to not move away from his house -because his wife demanded so-, one of the two ladies who work in his house prepared something for us to eat, and we had no other choice than to accept what they served us; when we expressed our disagreement, he accused us of being ungrateful...

When we accompanied him to a restaurant with his family, we had to be sitting there at a table, where he only offered us a pitcher of water and a ceviche for seven people...

"As soon as I could, I asked to be transferred to a prosecutor's office, since working with prosecutor Pech was humiliating, I always felt humiliated", recounts one of Miguel Ángel Pech Cen's ex-escorts, a clerk who has lied about the Borge case since the beginning, and who trying to make the public believe that when he manages to process him it in the state, he will be able to place greater liabilities on him.
